Syrian RefugeesMillions of Syrian men, women and children who are being displaced because of the Civil war that has been raging since 2011. Over half the population of Syria is escaping because they are seeing their neighbours bombed and family members killed. They are fleeing across the Mediterranean Sea from Turkey to Greece and then onto Macedonia and the rest of Europe. Those who do reach Greece find that it has its own economic challenges and they receive little official help.

Tommie and Gunilla Naumann are MV Field Coordinators based in Thessaloniki in Northern Greece and they have helped to mobilise the local churches to come alongside the refugees day and night providing packages of clothing, food and a short greeting together with a passage from the Bible. The help has been so gratefully received.

Zulu Women Sewing ClassCathy Potter is a Field Coordinator with Missionary Ventures based in Durban, South Africa. She has a heart for the Zulu women in the poor districts in the valley of a thousand hills. For several years she has been providing baking, sewing and other classes. The aim is for the women to gain a sense of self-worth and confidence and so be able to run their own small businesses to provide income for their families. Their biggest need is often to find the fees to put their children through school. Cathy sums it up by saying that “God gives hope to the hopeless”. The funds will pay for equipment and materials used in the classes.

Zambia: Hope in Christ SchoolPastor Paul Swala and his wife Mary head up Hope in Christ Church in the Roma District of Zambia’s capital city Lusaka. They also run Hope in Christ School which provides an education for approx. 150 children from poor backgrounds. The church/school and not the government employ and pay the schoolteachers so they are dependent upon gifts and school fees but many parents are unable to afford them. The block-making business was established in 2014 with the provision of a block-making machine and is already producing two sizes of blocks. The project provides job opportunities for some of unemployed men that the church has reached. The profits from the business contribute towards the teacher’s salaries. The further funds required will be used to buy larger quantities of sand and cement to enable the business to sell larger quantities to local builders.
