A Week in Latvia: Supporting the Baltic School of Ministry
By Darren and Susan | Missionary Ventures GB
From November 18th to 25th, 2024, we had the privilege of visiting the Baltic School of Ministry (BSM) in Ozolnieki, Latvia. This trip was a powerful opportunity to connect with Mauro and Julija, the dedicated directors of BSM, and meet Matias and Santa, newly appointed Missionary Ventures missionaries. Alongside them, we were inspired by the students, their stories, and the incredible work God is doing through this ministry.
What is the Baltic School of Ministry?
BSM is a one-year discipleship and ministry training program that equips students from diverse backgrounds, including Ukraine, Russia, Latvia, and the UK. Through intensive study and mentorship, students grow spiritually, develop their identities in Christ, and prepare to serve their communities. Lessons are taught in English and translated into Russian and Latvian.
Despite the current facility’s maintenance needs, the team at BSM continues to create a welcoming and impactful environment. Their vision is clear: to equip students to “discover, become, and go” — fulfilling their callings in Christ.

Trip Highlights
1. DBS Sessions
We introduced Discovery Bible Study (DBS) and led a new initiative called “Checkpoint,” where students reflect on their spiritual growth and journey with Jesus. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with one student planning to start a DBS group in her home church. It was incredible to see the students’ engagement and hunger for sharing the gospel.
2. Connecting with Leaders and Families
Meeting Mauro, Julija, and their children reminded us of their strength and faithfulness in leading BSM while balancing family life. We also met Matias and Santa, who are living onsite with their family. Both families inspired us with their commitment to God’s mission and their desire to see BSM grow.
3. Spending Time with the Students
Living alongside the students gave us insight into their daily routines: “Pray, Eat, Study, Sleep, Repeat.” Through shared meals, conversations, and games like table tennis and Novuss, we built relationships and heard their testimonies of transformation.
4. Worship and Testimony
We shared our testimonies during an evening chapel session. The worship, led by talented musicians and creatives, was vibrant and heartfelt. We were moved by the students’ openness and creativity, which clearly reflect God’s hand on their lives.
5. Checkpoint Day
Mauro gave us a theme “The power of small things”, the students were split into 3 small groups dependant on language and the need for translation. The
student were given a message on the subject to take away individually and read, pray and come into a group to discuss. We took each group for an hour and asked questions on the topic to see how students saw the power of small things in their lives both positive and negative. We very much ministered identity and very practical methods of dealing with thoughts and the mind in the everyday following of Jesus. It was an amazing time of openness, dealing with issues and prayer. We felt Holy Spirit was evident in encouraging identity and healing in those things that affect us in the small things such as our thoughts and actions – where the battle is. We were encouraging that we have the victory already!
How We Can Support BSM
BSM is thriving spiritually, but there are practical needs where we can help:
1. Raise Awareness: More students mean greater sustainability. Help spread the word about this life-changing program.
2. Provide New Mattresses: The dorms need at least 20 new mattresses, costing £2,000. Missionary Ventures GB has already pledged £500, but more support is needed.
3. Volunteer Leaders: Leaders are invited to facilitate future “Checkpoint” sessions.
4. Renovation and Maintenance: The building requires significant updates to improve efficiency and create an excellent learning environment. A large donation or skilled volunteer teams could make a big difference.
5. Pray: Join us in prayer for the students, staff, and leaders at BSM.
Conclusion
Our time at BSM was filled with fellowship, ministry, and encouragement. The impact of this school reaches far beyond Latvia, equipping students to make a gospel impact across Europe and beyond.
We left inspired by the strength of the BSM team and the students’ testimonies. While the facility has its challenges, the work being done within its walls is nothing short of excellent. With ongoing support, we believe BSM will continue to thrive as a beacon of discipleship and ministry training.
Thank you, Jesus, for the work You are doing through BSM. Bless this ministry, its leaders, and students.
If you would like to support BSM, consider donating, praying, or raising awareness about this incredible ministry.
Blessings,
Darren and Susan
